They only made 8077 of the ES’s with only about 5000 coming to the US. On shear numbers alone, this is a sleeper collectible destined for appreciation. Why is it the best vintage car? It’s a Volvo. I like to say the 1800 is like an MG except it runs. Plus did you know it’s an 1800 in the Guinness Book of World Records for car with the most miles? Do an internet search on Irv Gordon, he’s the record holder. https://www.autoblog.com/2013/09/18/irv-gordons-volvo-p1800-has-hit-3-million-miles/
This is the only 1800 model with a lot of room in it. My upright bass fits in it!
This car has always been a daily driver, California car. I am only the third owner. It’s been in St. Louis the last 8 years.
4 speed stick with electronic overdrive. It cruises at 100mph very smoothly. It’s long wheelbase and 15″ stock wheels assure a smooth ride. Good newer rubber, the car runs great. Everything works. All lights are good. All it needs is a paint job. I would do it, but I think it’s better you see what you’re getting. As with any car this old, there are some rust issues, but only surface rust, no place where it’s rusted through. And the metal on these is very thick. A few years back, we put a new cam shaft in and machined the heads, basically rebuilt the top half of the engine. No oil leaks and burns no oil. I’ll say it again, no oil leaks and burns no oil. Why buy a vintage car other than fun? This car will always be worth more as time goes on. It is pure joy to drive.
